Growing your business online is easy, but it can enhance the risk of scams or digital threats. In today’s business world, cyber-attacks are regularly increasing. The use of malware and data breaches is rising daily. According to a study on global cybersecurity in 2020, 304 million ransomware attacks were reported worldwide.

However, small businesses may feel that they are not a priority. In reality, smaller brands are the most prominent targets because they have fewer resources and lesser security protocols.

In a survey of IT security professionals worldwide, the number of cyber-attacks has increased since Covid-19, mainly in the area of data leakage and exfiltration. These attacks also include the transfer and unauthorized removal of data by malware or other viruses.

Here are a few ways to improve cyber security:

  1. Data Backup

After setting your business online, ensure you have enabled the backup option. Backing up your will lessens the chance of losing worthy information in case of a cyber attack. It’s better to use multiple data backup methods. Use a portable USB or external hard disk to backup data.

You can use daily, weekly, quarterly, and yearly backup plans according to your storage capacity. Backing up your data is a simple and inexpensive process.

2. Protect your Servers and Networks

The next step that you can take is to update all your security software to minimize the risk of digital threats. Secure your servers and operating system by setting up firewalls. The significant benefit of firewalls is they also act as a “gatekeeper of incoming and outgoing traffic.”

As a brand or company owner, your responsibility is to secure your internet connection(Wi-fi) and keep a strong password. To reduce the chance of different types of cyber-attacks, update security software regularly and install anti-virus anti-spyware to prevent any infection.

3. Educate your Staff/Employees

Your administrative staff play a crucial role in maintaining the security of your business. Train your staff about digital attacks, tell them their role in minimizing these risks. Keep a few employees for administrative work. With limited staff, it’ll reduce the chance of malware or malicious software. Educate your staff on how to maintain networks, how to recognize and avoid cyber-attack, and how to report them.

4. Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Another way to protect your business from cyber-attacks is to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). It is a process to verify the identity of a user by requiring them to provide two or more factors to gain access to a resource. Such as an application, an account, or a VPN connection. This security method reduces the chance of online threats.

Final Thoughts

To keep your company safe from cyber attacks, you need a strategic cyber security plan. Don’t believe that your brand is small and will not affect you. You’re an easy target for cybercrime due to less security. For that purpose, you need to hire some IT professionals who assist you in developing practical plans against digital threats. So, try to follow the ways mentioned above to improve cyber security.
