The Japan working holiday visa offers young people from different regions a chance to experience life in Japan. Japan launched working holiday programmes with Australia in 1980. Recently in April 2020, Japan announced a working programmes with the Netherlands.

Total 26 countries have received working holiday visas from Japan up to now. People who hold the visa can work while in Japan, and they are also allowed to travel throughout the country. The holiday program is based on a bilateral agreement. The objectives of this program are to allow youth to spend holidays and find jobs to cover their travel expenses.

Here are a few things that everyone needs to know before applying for Japan Working Holiday Visa:

  1. Working Holiday Programmes Eligibility

Remember that requirements may vary from person to person depending on the nationality. You can contact the Japan embassy in your country/region for further information. For participation in working holiday programme an individual must fulfil the following requirement:

  • An applicant must be between 18–30 years of age when applying. For Iceland, the age limit is 16–26 years. While for Australia, the Republic of Korea and Canada, applicants must have 18–25 years of age.
  • Applicants have good health and no criminal record.
  • Applicants of Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Canada, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Ireland, Argentina, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Hungary, Spain, Chile, Iceland, and the Czech Republic must be a citizen of their county. For residents of Hong Kong, they must have a valid British National Overseas passport or HKSAR. An applicant must possess a valid passport to Taiwan if they are a resident of Taiwan.
  • They must have a valid passport of their residence country and a return ticket or enough funds to buy the ticket.
  • Applicants do not have any dependent children.
  • They never possessed or issued a Japan visa in the past.
  • They want to spend holidays for a specific time, not longer.
  • Applicants must have enough funds for living in Japan.

2. How to apply for a Working Holiday Visa

There is no fee for the visa, but Japan sets quotas each year for each country participating in the Working Holiday Programme. There are a few guidelines for the application process:

  • Fill out your working holiday programme form.
  • Ensure you have all the required documents and proofs. You’ll need a valid passport, valid ID card, outlines of activities you perform in Japan, a written statement of why you are applying for Japan, as well as proof of enough funds for living and a return ticket.
  • After filling out the form, please submit it to your nearest embassy. They will also call for an interview if they find something unsure.

3. Working Conditions

After approval of the working holiday application, participants can move to Japan. They enjoy holidays and find work to earn. Different employment opportunities are available for applicants.

Keep in mind that some working conditions you need to follow. It is prohibited to work in nightclubs, bars, gambling establishments, or lounges. If anyone is found guilty of doing something illegal, they will be accused and punished by law & enforcement.
