BELIZE CITY, Oct 19 — Tropical Storm Nadine made landfall in Belize on Saturday, bringing intense rainfall and strong winds to the region. The storm is also affecting the northern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and is projected to continue its path into northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, including Chiapas and Tabasco, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Starting late Friday night, Nadine unleashed heavy showers and thunderstorms across Belize, with meteorologist Ronald Gordon reporting rainfall totals of up to 2 inches. The storm is currently moving west at about eight miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and gusts extending as far as 195 miles from the centre.

A tropical storm warning has been issued by the NHC for areas from Belize City to popular Mexican resorts such as Cancun and Cozumel. As the storm advances inland, additional rainfall of four to eight inches is expected, with isolated regions potentially seeing over 12 inches by Tuesday.

In Belize, authorities have expressed concerns over flooding, particularly as low-lying bridges and sections of the Coastal Highway south of Belize City are likely to be submerged. The storm is also predicted to impact key tourist destinations, including San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker.

Although Nadine is expected to weaken throughout Saturday, the NHC indicates that the storm will likely dissipate over southern Mexico by late Sunday. Residents are advised to remain alert and take precautions against potential flooding and disruptions.
